Three rules for choosing a shirt

Choosing a shirt need not be rocket science. All it takes is following three rules. And above all, be honest with yourself. Respect your build and the occasion for which you intend to wear the shirt. Here is how to go about it.

Choose the cut to match your figure. Choose the shirt for the occasion on which you will be wearing it. Choose the right size.

We choose the cut of a shirt according to our figure. There is no sense in reaching for an Extra Slim shirt when the past few weeks have been hectic and there was neither time nor energy left for a run. On the other hand, why hide a slim, athletic physique when there is something to show off.

A modern shirt cut that lets a slim to regular male figure come into its own. It is tailored at the right points to emphasise the line of the male body.

As the name suggests, this is a highly slimmed-down cut. The sleeves are narrowed as well. An Extra Slim shirt lets a genuinely slim male figure really shine.

A straight-cut shirt suits men with a classic, non-athletic build. It has the same width across the chest, waist and hips. It never clings too tightly, so it does not emphasise any unwanted proportions and, on the contrary, helps to conceal various imperfections.

2. Choosing a shirt for the occasion

The first step is to divide shirts into formal and casual. Heading to a social event or a business meeting? Formal-style shirts are exactly the thing for these occasions.

Solid-coloured casual shirts, or those with a discreet pattern, will serve you well in everyday work.

For leisure you can truly let yourself go and even reach for a shirt with a touch of extravagance. Patterned shirts, for example, are particularly interesting.

3. Choosing the right size

The choice of shirt size depends on neck circumference and sleeve length. These are the two key measurements that decide whether you will both look good and feel good in the shirt.

Measure your neck circumference just below the Adam's apple with a tailor's tape (or a piece of string). Ideally, you should be able to slip one finger comfortably between the collar and the neck. The measurement is your shirt size. If you intend to wear the shirt with a tie, the collar should correspond exactly to the measured circumference. For casual shirts the collar can be a touch looser.

Finding the right sleeve length is simple. Let your arms hang relaxed along your body; the cuff should end at the base of the thumb. Only a little of it should protrude from the jacket sleeve. Take care that the cuff is not too narrow: it should gently wrap around a wristwatch.
