Looking good in summer without risking sunstroke is no easy task. If the situation allows you to ditch the long-sleeved shirt, one very welcome alternative presents itself: the polo shirt. You will appreciate its virtues most on the very days when the mercury hovers above thirty degrees Celsius.
But what do you do with a polo shirt when the evening turns cooler? Is it possible to pair a polo stylishly with a jacket? And is such a combination even permissible?
You can safely wear a jacket with a polo, but only a casual one. Polo shirts in themselves are only suited to informal occasions. Combining them with a formal jacket is therefore not the best idea.
How to pick a jacket to go with a polo shirt
A casual jacket worn with a polo should look relaxed and informal at first glance. Cotton and linen jackets without sharply structured shoulders are especially suitable.
Patterned jackets also work wonderfully with polo shirts — knitted jackets look particularly good. If you have one in your wardrobe, do reach for it.
Keep it simple — a rule that applies not only to polos
A polo shirt worn with a jacket should stick to simple colours. Black, white, beige, navy — your polo does not have to shout from the rooftops to look great on you. Remember that when a green-and-fuchsia one catches your eye.
How to match the pattern of a jacket and a polo shirt
The trickiest part is choosing the right patterns for the jacket and the polo that work together. Every jacket and every polo is unique, so general rules are hard to come by. There are, however, a few.
Under no circumstances should the patterns of the jacket and the polo be identical. A slight contrast is desirable, but you must not overdo it. If the patterns differ too dramatically, it grates on the eye.
To avoid “over-mixing” colours and patterns, it is a good idea to decide which item will be dominant — the jacket or the polo. The one you choose may have a bolder colour and pattern and draw the attention of those around you. The other is then less conspicuous and merely complements it.
Three final tips for wearing a polo:
1. Always keep the polo collar tucked under the jacket.
2. If your figure allows, do not be afraid to tuck the polo into your trousers.
3. And if the weather allows, button the polo all the way up to the neck.
