How to match a pocket square with a suit or blazer?

The pocket square is, in fact, the most liberated of all men’s accessories. When it comes to choosing one, the rules of etiquette give men a completely free hand. Its main task is to reflect your personality and taste. And take it from us – once you fall under the spell of pocket squares, one or two will simply not be enough.

How to choose a pocket square to suit the occasion

There are no hard-and-fast rules for wearing a pocket square according to the occasion. The general guideline, however, is this: the more relaxed the atmosphere, the more pronounced the pattern may be.

At formal events a plain, single-colour pocket square will serve you perfectly well. If you anticipate a more relaxed atmosphere, however, or simply wish to stand out from the crowd, there are no limits to your imagination. And if you are undecided, remember that you can never go wrong with a plain white pocket square.

It is worth bearing in mind that wearing a pocket square with a suit or a jacket is not compulsory. If you want to appear utterly serious at a business meeting, or simply prefer not to draw attention to yourself, you can quite happily leave the pocket square at home.

What you can coordinate your pocket square with:

• With the colour of the suit or jacket

Here you have two options. You can either echo the colour of the suit, or strive for the maximum contrast. In the first case, pair a light-blue pocket square with a dark-blue suit. In the second, reach for green, red or, say, yellow.

Bear in mind, though, that the pocket square should complement the tie, never copy it. A colour that is dominant on the tie may be secondary on the pocket square – and vice versa.

The same rule applies here as with the tie. Do not copy the pattern or colour one to one; instead, aim for a smooth transition.

• With another striking accessory

You can coordinate a pocket square with virtually anything – that is precisely its charm. Find one, for example, that matches a pair of cheerful socks.

If you feel confident, simply choose a pocket square you like. No rule forbids it.

How to choose the right material for a pocket square:

Light, fine and shimmering silk pocket squares are suited to any occasion. They look splendid even with ties of heavier fabrics. What is more, they are very thin, so the breast pocket of your jacket will not bulge.

They give a fresh impression, which is why cotton and linen pocket squares are encountered mainly in summer. They are particularly popular in simpler patterns. They are very durable, hard-wearing, and easy to wash and iron.

Compared with the two previous types, woollen pocket squares have an entirely different texture, which lends itself perfectly to the winter months.

Steer well clear of matching sets!

Never buy ready-made sets of matching tie and pocket square. Why? In short – it simply does not look good. The pocket square is an optional accessory where you can give free rein to your creativity. Sets are the equivalent of dullness and cliché.

So why are such sets sold at all? It is just like square-toed shoes. Where there is demand, there is supply.
