A strict style with precisely defined rules and conventions, ignorance of which is no excuse. You will not be fined for failing to observe them, nor do you face prosecution, but you can spoil an important meeting or job interview right from the start. Allow us to introduce you – the business formal dress code.
When and where must you observe the business formal dress code?
Most business companies and senior management positions adhere to a rather relaxed business style of dressing. A strict business formal dress code is today required above all by banks, insurance companies, some international trading companies and large law firms. It tends to be expected at significant business meetings or at job interviews in certain companies.
TIP: Do you have an important interview or meeting ahead of you? Enquire in advance about the dress code prescribed by the company.
What is the men’s business formal dress code?
The foundation is the almost sacred trinity of suit – tie – shirt. The suit should be dark, with the ideal option being dark grey or dark blue. Black is not wrong, but it is not suitable absolutely everywhere. In the hot summer you may reach for a light beige suit. A plain shirt belongs with a business formal suit. White is ideal, but other light colours or a very subtle pattern are also acceptable. The suit and shirt are complemented by a tie. Always choose understated ties. Garish colours, bold patterns or even pictures are not permissible.
TIP: Learn how to tie a tie correctly and leave the bottom button of the jacket undone.
Business formal dress code and accessories
The accessories of a gentleman’s outfit must be coordinated. The first thing you choose is footwear. The most suitable are plain black or brown leather Oxfords, but Derby-style shoes are also acceptable. Then match your belt, watch, briefcase and wallet to the colour of your shoes. All metal elements should also be coordinated. Do you have a watch with a silver buckle? Then the buckle on your belt and briefcase should also be silver.
In the winter months, complete the outfit with a coat. A dark wool coat or a trench coat is most suitable. Your gloves should also match. Choose leather gloves in the colour of your footwear and other accessories.
TIP: Invest in high-quality materials. Accessories made from them look superb and last a long time.
