What exactly is the Smart Casual dress code? It can be a bomber jacket with a tie, a T-shirt with a blazer, or a separate waistcoat with a casual shirt. It is simply the joining of formal and informal wardrobe elements into a single working whole. Yet it must not be a random combination. With Smart Casual you should always give the impression that you know exactly what you are doing. In other words – be "smart".
Smart Casual, a dress code (seemingly) without rules
Most dress codes have clearly set and defined rules. Black Tie calls for a tuxedo with a bow tie, Business Formal for a well-fitting suit in a darker shade and a tie. With Smart Casual it is not quite the same; you simply have to strike a balance between the Business Casual and Casual dress codes.
Smart Casual means much greater freedom in choosing your clothing, which, in menswear so full of rules, makes for a very welcome change. On the other hand, this dress code places greater demands on the wearer's taste. The pairing of formal and informal elements can be confusing for gentlemen who are not particularly well versed in fashion.
You have to feel Smart Casual
A well-composed outfit in the Smart Casual dress code could be summed up by saying you will feel splendid in it almost anywhere. You should feel self-assured and comfortable in it at a morning meeting, on a stroll through town, at a working lunch, and at home alone.
When putting together your own outfit, you basically have two options. Either you will draw on an already prepared outfit by which you are inspired, or you will experiment. Try how chinos sit with the rest of your attire and how jeans do, whether a sweater, a T-shirt or a shirt is better, and whether the right finishing piece is a blazer, a bomber, or perhaps a jacket. The combinations are endless!
The colours and patterns of Smart Casual
The Smart Casual dress code allows you to wear colours, patterns and cuts that would not pass muster in a purely formal dress code. Fancy a shirt with a stand-up collar and a green checked blazer? In Smart Casual, no problem at all.
