Not so long ago, the combination of sneakers and a suit was considered entirely unacceptable. But times change and so does fashion. Arriving at the office in an informal grey suit with brilliant white sneakers is no longer a faux pas today. Quite the opposite — you come across as youthful and self-assured.

The combination of sneakers and a suit is seen most often in Business Casual and Smart Casual styles. In other words, styles suited to offices with a more relaxed atmosphere.

Which sneakers go with a suit?

One thing must be stressed — not every pair of sneakers goes with a suit. Ideally they should be elegantly minimalist. Single-colour black, brown, blue or white pairs are therefore the most suitable. We recommend avoiding patterned and multicoloured sneakers. Their clean, simple appearance works best in combination with a suit.

A suitable material for sneakers is smooth leather, suede or nubuck. The shoe should have a simple silhouette with a round toe and ideally sit below the ankle, although ankle-high pairs can be worn as well. Bear in mind, however, that in that case you will need a suit with a shorter trouser length.

Which suit goes with sneakers?

The rule that not every pair of sneakers belongs with a suit applies the other way round too — sneakers certainly do not belong with formal suits. However, they pair perfectly with informal airy suits made of lightweight fabrics, suitable for daily wear to work or for leisure.

An example of such a suit is our new washable suit, for which we used an innovative woollen fabric from the Italian manufacturer Reda. The slimmed silhouette of the jacket and trousers, combined with sneakers, will lend your outfit an elegant sporty look.

Sneakers will also look great with suits in simple or more expressive patterns. With minimalist single-colour sneakers you need not hesitate to try fabrics with check, stripe or jacquard patterns.

What to pay attention to when combining sneakers with a suit

● In spring and summer, sneakers look their best when worn barefoot or with no-show socks. What is more, at higher temperatures you will not feel as hot.

● Avoid formal elements in your outfit. An overly formal shirt or tie can completely shatter the relaxed sporty impression of a suit with sneakers.

● Make sure your leather sneakers are kept in perfect condition. It is often forgotten that they require just as much careful attention as oxfords. And when you wear them with a suit, this applies twice over. Take care, therefore, that they are always spotlessly clean and regularly creamed.
