Which jumper is the right one?

Few garments combine elegance with practicality as successfully as the jumper. A woollen jumper, for instance, possesses excellent thermoregulating properties: it keeps you warm in the cold and wicks perspiration away during the summer. The qualities of a jumper vary according to its composition, and it therefore comes as no surprise that today there exists a whole range of types and cuts serving different purposes. Some jumpers are worn over a shirt, others are worn in place of a shirt, and some even take the role of a separate jacket.

Do you know how to wear the various types of jumpers?

Pullovers are classified according to the type of collar:

● The crew-neck pullover is historically the oldest type of jumper, with origins reaching back to the 15th century. It is generally worn with a shirt, a polo shirt or a T-shirt. Some textured crew-neck jumpers can, however, also be worn directly against the skin.

● The V-neck pullover is worn in combination with a shirt or a polo shirt. This type of jumper is most frequently seen with a suit or a separate jacket, as the V-cut comes into its own most beautifully when combined with a tie.

● The pullover with an asymmetric shawl collar. You will appreciate this type of jumper if you are seeking something less common yet at the same time practical. The shawl collar protects the neck from the cold in a manner similar to a roll-neck. A fine example of this style is a jacquard jumper made of soft merino wool of extra fine quality, which can be worn with casual trousers in combination with a spring overcoat or a jacket.

Cardigans are particularly popular in British fashion. Thanks to their easy fastening they serve as a practical alternative to a separate jacket within casual outfits.

Sometimes the fastening of a cardigan reaches only from the chest to the neck; at other times it runs all the way down to the hips. In both cases, however, cardigans do not belong to formal attire. The only exception is the knitted waistcoat with small buttons.

Cardigans are classified according to the type of fastening:

● The zipped cardigan is worn with a shirt, a T-shirt as well as a polo shirt. It can be worn on its own or beneath a jacket or overcoat as an additional layer. A jumper in unakite colour with a stand-up collar made of 100% merino wool, for instance, will reliably keep you warm even in the harshest frosts.

● The buttoned cardigan has become rather a rare sight in recent years. It usually features a deeper V-shaped neckline and is worn with a shirt or a polo shirt.

Did you know that the first to wear roll-necks at the turn of the 19th and 20th century were sailors? They took a liking to them chiefly because they sit snugly against the neck, preventing too much body heat from escaping. A fine woollen or cashmere roll-neck can therefore easily replace a scarf.

● Formal roll-necks. A thin, untextured, plain roll-neck can be a pleasant alternative to a shirt within a suit, gently relaxing the outfit while still preserving its formal appearance. An example of an elegant roll-neck to pair with a suit is a discreet dark-grey jumper composed of 85% Eggito Mako cotton and 15% cashmere.

● Informal roll-necks may be plain or multicoloured. The jumper you choose should always, however, be in harmony with the outfit and the occasion for which you are wearing it. In the Blažek collection we always prefer restrained and muted shades. Roll-necks are often textured and also come in non-traditional V-shaped cuts. They can be combined with a separate jacket or worn on their own.
